Saturday 2 July, 10am - 5pm

Sunset Park will be transformed into a garden of bamboo curiosities, with opportunities to build, play and explore. Activities take place through the day, plus look out for the Imagine Bamboo Orchestra, film screenings and more.

Here’s what’s on:


Bamboo Builds International 
10am - 5pm: Arch lifting at around 11.30am, Testing from around 2pm, First person on the Bamboo Swing at around 4.45pm

Engineers from Atelier One join bamboo experts from the UK and across the globe, who are meeting and working together for the first time, to build and test a giant arch and swing, made from bamboo.  You’re invited to watch their progress through the day and help load test this magnificent new creation with water weights. Join the great global experiment in bamboo building!


Bamboo Model Makes
10am - 5pm

Design and make models from bamboo, under the guidance of artist-maker Lou Jones with special guest designer-maker-engineers from across the UK. Suitable for all ages, drop-in. 


Bamboo Builds with Arup
10am - 5pm

Join engineers and designers from global structural engineering firm Arup to build your own bamboo structure from a specially designed kit. Suitable for all ages, drop-in.


The Great Bamboo Circus Experiment
11am, 1.30pm, 4pm

Imagineer and NoFit State Circus have invited circus acrobats and engineers to explore what circus structures, performance and tricks can be created using UK-grown borinda bamboo. Find out what they've discovered so far and join in with some new balancing, hula-hooping and juggling experiments. Suitable for all ages, drop-in.


Bamboo Talk: Introducing Bernice Dapaah and Anowa Augustina from Ghana Bamboo Bikes
12.30pm – 1pm

An informal conversation with Bernice and Anowa from Ghana Bamboo Bikes. Find out who they are, what they make and what inspires them about bamboo in their context.


Bamboo Talk: Re-Imagine Bamboo
2.30pm – 3.15pm

Jane Hytch (Imagineer) and artist-makers from across the UK share what they’ve discovered and what’s inspired them about bamboo, the most sustainable material on the planet.


Bamboo Talk: Introducing Rebecca Reubens, Rhizome Design, India
3pm – 3.30pm
An informal conversation with Rebecca about her work and what inspires her about bamboo.


Bamboo Makes with Rhizome
3.30pm - 4.15pm

Hands-on demonstration led by Ratan Chandra Pal and Rebecca Reubens from Rhizome, India’s first design multi-disciplinary holistic sustainability design studio.
